Look to the Light

Merry Christmas to all! Short blog this week but the message is of great importance to the whole world!
No matter what age we are, this time of the year is a great time to reflect upon the greatest gift given to man. We have all made mistakes in life and sometimes our burdens are very hard to deal with. There is a way provided for us to be cleansed from the guilt of our errors and if we "Look to the Light" our burdens can be made light. This is one of my very favorite Christmas messages and I hope you all enjoy it. Feel free to comment and share your story as the people in this video do :)

Learning from the Little Drummer Boy

Hope you are having a wonderful holiday season! For this week's blog I will share the talk a gave today for the ward Christmas sacrament meeting program:

I am grateful today to be able to share with you my humble testimony of the  Savior of the world. The One who has borne our grief and carried our sorrows even when he was stricken and despised. The One who was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. The very Son of God that suffered grave chastisement so that we can have peace in this troublesome world.

As I have been thinking of what message I can share today my heart was drawn to a classic Christmas story that most if us probably know called the Little Drummer Boy. I think my thoughts were drawn towards this tale because of the special message it can teach us all. I pray the spirit can lift each of us as I speak today.

In the beginning of the story of the little drummer boy we hear the inviting words, "Come they told me. A new born king to see." To me this represents the simple yet powerful invitation The Lord has given us all to come unto Christ.

As the little drummer boy starts his journey to see the Savior he notices something that could have possibly brought some discouragement to his little heart.
He realizes that everyone around him is bringing great gifts to lay before The Lord. He begins to think inside himself, "I have no gift to bring, that's fit to give the king."

We may sometimes ask ourself similar questions such as, "How can I in my imperfections and weaknesses ever give something useful to my savior? I see those around me who seem to be carrying overflowing armfuls of precious gifts. What gift could I offer The Lord?"

We see that Despite the discouragement the little drummer boy may have been experiencing at that time, he pressed on. He gave The Lord the only gift he had to give. He pulled out his drum and played. And in the story the little drummer boy proclaims, "I played my best for him."
To me, the drum in this tale represents love. The little drummer boy not only gave a gift of love to The Lord, but he loved The Lord to the best of his ability. So what can we learn from this? The truth is that dispite our imperfections and weaknesses, whatever they may be, we all have a very precious gift to give to The Savior.
Love is the most precious gift we can give. As we keep the commandments, cling tightly to the iron rod and help others do the same, we are showing our love to Him who has given us everything.

Let us strive to be more like the little drummer boy and all throughout our journey on our way to see The Lord let is play our loving drums with humility and gratitude. Let us Feast upon the words of Christ, always abound in good works, repent and be cleansed from sin, And most importantly, never give up.  For when we love The Lord we are stronger and more powerful than we can imagine. The Lord has promised that "all things work together for good to them that love God."

I testify that that little baby of Bethlehem grew up and saved the world. He came to us to let us know that it is ok to be broken because He can make us perfect if we will just love Him with all we have.
For as Moroni says, "if we love god with all or might mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for us so that by his grace we may be be perfect in Christ."
I bare personal testimony that as we offer our own gift of sincere love to The Lord, His atoning power binds up our wounds, enlightens our troubled minds, and heals our brokenness.
As the scriptures say:
Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Of this I testify, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Christmas Miracle!

Through an experience I had this weekend I was reminded of the importance of persevering towards our goals even when the odds are slim!

So we planned a double date to go see a showing of the play Savior of the World in Salt Lake City this past Friday with hopes of getting four standby tickets because the show was sold out. We left a bit latter than expected and their was a bunch of traffic so we didn't get there until right before the show was going to start. We quickly made a plan to drop of my buddy and his date (who had crutches) in front of the conference center while my date and I searched for parking. When we finally found parking we were in such a hurry to run to the ticket offices that we both forgot our phones in the car and had no way of contacting the others. We decided to just keep going without our phones and hope to find them. Turns out that we arrived at the ticket office at the exact same time as my buddy and his date so we were able to find each other! We then asked the man outside if there were any standby tickets and he told us that there were none! We were about to leave when we decided to just go in anyways just to check for ourselves. When we entered the theatre our group was easily spotted thanks to our friend in crutches and out of the blue we were offered four free tickets! All the circumstances leading up to that point made for some perfect timing where we were right where we needed to be at the right time! We enjoyed an absolutely beautiful show and we marveled at the miracle that allowed us to get there! Through this experienced we learned that when we have a worthy goal we shouldn't be stopped just because others tell us we can't get there. With faith and The Lord's well timed, tender mercies miracles really do happen!

Wrong Roads

Sometimes we make mistakes. Even when we are trying our best to make the right choices nobody could get through this life without ever going down the wrong road and hitting a dead end every once in a while. Why does God allow this to happen? Why does God let us go down the wrong roads sometimes? I love this short message by Elder Holland that gives a response to this commonly asked question. Think about your own experiences as you watch and listen to your heart so that God can help you understand why certain things happen in life

I know too that God loves us. Everything that He does is focused us giving us an opportunity to come closer to Him. Its all about love. God knows better than us what is best for us. Many times in my life I have experienced this fact. Sometimes we have to go through certain trials or learn certain lesson so that we can get to where we are meant to be and become who we are meant to become. Sometimes it is hard to understand why we have to go through certain things, but it is a beautiful thing when we just continue to trust in The Lord and see His hand work miracles in our life. He never leaves us alone. He is always by our side leading us to our own promised land. Feel free to share your own experiences on how God has led you by the hand through darkness to get to where you were meant to go. :) Have a great week!

Gratitude

During the decade of decisions and throughout our whole life we can be happier when she show gratitude. Thank you Nicole Ashby for being the guest blogger and writing about the importance of gratitude for you! Happy Thanksgiving to all and enjoy this post :)

Nicole writes:

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, many people reflect on the things they are grateful for.
In this video, Elder Hales talks about how we can show gratitude to our Heavenly Father in more ways than one.  He also talks about why it is important to have a thankful heart.

What a beautiful way to explain how Heavenly Father views our acts of gratitude.  I love that Elder Hales says, “our obedience to the laws and ordinances and commandments is the greatest expression of love and gratitude that we can bestow upon Him.”
Heavenly Father told us how to show him that we love him.  He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” –John 14:15
These are powerful statements that cannot be overlooked.  I have often thought about why we choose to be obedient to the commandments and to uphold the standards that we do as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  As we grow up, each stage in our life seems to offer various ways to live in a worldly manner.  There are so many things vying for our attention; it is really quite pervasive.  Heavenly Father is aware of the temptations we face, and He feels that we value Him when we choose His ways.
Additionally, it is important that we express our gratitude to our Father in words.  In humble prayer we tell God that we recognize His hand in all things.  We realize that the goodness in our lives comes from Him, not from us or random happenstance.  Some of my most spiritual memories have been realizing how much I have to be thankful for as I express thanks to God for big and small blessings in my life.  It becomes more natural to look for blessings in my life as I thank Him for them often.
There truly is so much to be grateful for!  An attitude of gratitude has proven to brighten my life and I am no anomaly. It helps me to focus on what I DO have and not dwell on what I don’t have.  When we feel that blessings are few, it is important to say to our Father, “Thy will be done.”  He sees us using the Savior’s Atonement to lighten our heavy hearts.  He reaches our reaching and is proud of us when we recognize that it is Him through which our blessings come.  My relationships are sweeter as I tell people I am grateful for what they do to bless my life, often simply by being in my life.  Just as Elder Hales says, “Gratitude is a divine principle.”  I have felt that divine Spirit and Comfort that is open to all who will recognize and thank Heavenly Father for their blessings.

Seize the day!

This week's blog is about taking advantage of all good opportunities that come our way and it's written in both English and German by guest blogger Eliza Garlick. Thanks Eliza! She writes:
Mark Twain said, “I was seldom able to see an opportunity until it had ceased to be one.” There are so many possibilities before us every single day!  We have the opportunity to choose what we will do and who we will become.  If we are not aware and actively seeking out opportunities we may miss them.  When we take advantage of the opportunities presented us, we will be able to have a more rich life.
I love this quote from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Apostle of Jesus Christ.  He talked about being grateful and celebrating these opportunities presented to us. “…Don’t close your eyes and hearts to the simple and elegant beauties of each day’s ordinary moments that make up a rich, well-lived life. The happiest people I know are not those who find their golden ticket; they are those who, while in pursuit of worthy goals, discover and treasure the beauty and sweetness of the everyday moments. They are the ones who, thread by daily thread, weave a tapestry of gratitude and wonder throughout their lives. These are they who are truly happy.
Last week, I had such an opportunity, to go with a group of friends to celebrate a German holiday called St. Martins day.  St. Martin was such a person that took advantage of the opportunities to do good and reach his potential.  The most famous story about him is that he was riding his horse on a very cold night and saw a beggar in need of his help and the warmth he could give.  He got off the horse and gave the beggar half of his cloak.  He saw the opportunity to do good and took it right away.
The Festival can be compared to the American Halloween where children walk along the streets and knock on the doors to get treats.  In order to receive candy in Germany, the children sing a song and hold a paper lantern they have made themselves.
One of the songs includes:
LaterneLaterne,
SonneMond und Sterne,
Brenne auf mein Licht
Brenne auf mein Licht
Aber nur meine liebe Laterne nicht.
Laterne Laterne
Sonne mond und sterne,
Sperrt ihn ein, den Wind,
Sperrt ihn ein den Wind
Er soll warten bis wir zu Hause sind
Laterne Laterne
Sonne mond und Sterne
Bleibe hell mein Licht
Bleibe hell mein Licht
Sonst strahlt meine liebe Laterne nicht.

Basically translated it means: lantern, lantern, sun, moon and starts, just wait wind, just wait wind, you should wait until we are at home.  Lantern ,lantern, sun, moon, and stars.  Stay bright my light, stay bright my light, or else my wonderful lantern won’t shine.
St. Martin’s day is always celebrated on November 11, a time when because of the time changes and the season changing, it is very dark, and the celebration is to remember the light and to bring light into the world.  St. Martin did this in the way he served others, and that is something we can remember every day.  We can choose to be the difference that the world needs and take advantage of these opportunities available to us.
This wonderful family from Stuttgart Germany has lived in Provo for 5 years and they generously hosted the neighborhood as well as a group of students from BYU in their home.  The night started off with making homemade paper lanterns.  If you would like to make one of your own follow this link:http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-paper-lantern-in-6-easy-steps/

After our lanterns were ready, we watched a little skit of St. Martin given in German with an English translation.  It was neat to look around the circle of so many different people of all ages and cultural backgrounds together to celebrate.

We walked around the block holding our own paper lanterns and following a horse with someone acting as St. Martin.  It was a neat experience to meet new people, experience a new culture, and learn how to do new things.  Each day when we choose to take advantage of opportunities like this, we are adding new moments to our tapestry of happiness and life experience.

Sometimes I almost get overwhelmed at all of the opportunities available.  I’ve called it the Disneyland syndrome:  there are just so many things to do and so little time!  There are even more opportunities available  it seems when we are college age students in a university town.  There are always cultural and local events where we can get to know others and share ourselves with them as well.  One way we can take advantage ofthese opportunities is to start now.  Little by little and day by day looking for opportunities, and where there aren’t opportunities creating them!  When we do this we can be like lanterns on a dark winter night reminding us of goodness and light in the midst of trial and problems.

He will guide us

Nov 8
I am really excited to start this blog! I hope I don't sound awkward at first as I write because I have never done a blog before. So don't judge... :)
Anyways, for my first blog I want to share an experience that happened to me the other day that illustrates a principle that I consider very important in all my decision making.

A little background info: Often we are given opportunities to organize or lead an activity or group which requires a good amount of planning and time. I was recently blessed with one of these opportunities here in Provo. I was asked by local church leaders to help develop a way that many local members of the church can use social media to share the things that matter most to them with others. I took it to The Lord in prayer. For a week straight ideas flowed into my mind and many friends added great council. Now here is the neat story I wanted to focus on:

On Thursday after my Music 101 class I was walking with a buddy named Hayden and he asked me what I was doing that night. I told him I would probably be brainstorming ideas for this church assignment I had received and I explained what it was. We then had an awesome discussion about the project. He went on to say that he knew somebody that could be of great help to this cause. He knew the social media representative of a large company who was well trained in spreading information through technology. That very night my buddy Hayden called her and I was surprised at what she told him. She said that recently she had just finished a book called The Power of an Everyday Missionary (a book I am currently reading) and right before my buddy called she was pondering on how she could better use her skills for a good cause in the world! Hayden passed me her contact info and when I called her I could hear the excitement in her voice when she said "I'll be over in fifteen minutes!" That night we had an awesome discussed that proved to be quite helpful and productive. I know that it was meant to be.

The principle that this experience illustrates for me is that when we have responsibilities or decisions to make, if we go to The Lord for help He will always be there for us guiding us and helping us. As I continue to share experiences on this blog I will also share about what role God played in each of those circumstances. Sometimes it's hard to recognize his answers, sometimes He lets us decide for ourselves and sometimes He even shows us His sense of humor. In all cases, I know that he is always there to guide us when we seek Him.

Feel free to share your feelings on this subject in the comments :)

This is me and my dog before she passed away :)
